Dear Parents, The UAB Band is hosting a day where high school bands from all over the state will come in and spend the day with the Blazers. Each student will spend a couple of hours in sectionals and masterclasses that will be taught by college professors. They will spend time in rehearsal with the director of bands at UAB, as well as practice with the college band. I am asking that every student participate in this day regardless of grade and age. This is a great opportunity for them to meet other high school students from the state of Alabama as well as play with a college band. The cost is $35 per student. You may ask, "Why do we have to pay for it, and not the boosters?" Well, I look at it this way. If the English or Science class were to take a field trip, you would have to pay for the cost of using a bus, lunch money, and money to purchase items. This would be the same as taking a field trip, and you pay for a t-shirt, lunch, personal instruction, and a ticket to a college game. It is not often that our students get to play with a college band, take a lesson from a professional or rehearse with other students from the state. This event will be highly educational, and worth every dollar. You may also ask, "Why just UAB?" Well, UAB is closer to home, and it is cheaper to get them all to UAB than to rent buses for travel outside of Birmingham. However, I would like to expose them to these schools and more. If we travelled passed Birmingham right now, we'd be out of a lot of money. I have asked the students to turn their money in by September 8th. If you can not pay it all at once, we can make arrangements for money to be paid in small installments. I realize that the band may be asking for lots of money this year but it is all going to a good cause. I want to expose the students to the world of music, and we can't do that if we stay in our comfort zones. Please be patient with the program this year. I had to inherit many things that are not quite up to my standards, and it will take me a while to make things a little better. I believe your child deserves the best when it comes to this program, and I will do my best to make that happen. They should have brought home a handbook and a newsletter by now. If they have not, please check the website for important dates that are coming up in the near future. Thank you for your cooperation.
